How to Get More Generator Installation Jobs: Marketing for Electricians
Want this worked out for your numbers? Free 15-min check → or call +1 (256) 516-9910
Summary: Generator installs are big, planned purchases that spike after outages, so build the marketing before the season. Run Search ads on install searches, not "generator for sale". Send them to a generator page that answers sizing, fuel and permit questions, and list the service on your Business Profile. Then follow up every quote, because many homeowners take time to decide.
Generator work is unlike the rest of an electrician's calendar. A panel upgrade or an EV charger can be booked any month. Generator demand moves with the weather and the news. When the lights go out across a region, every homeowner who sat in the dark starts searching at once, and the electricians who already have ads, a page and reviews in place take those calls.
Why outages drive the work
The U.S. Energy Information Administration says the average electricity customer went 11 hours without power in 2024, nearly twice the average of the decade before. Major events such as Hurricanes Beryl, Helene and Milton caused 80% of those hours. Outages not tied to major events averaged about two hours a year.
So the pattern is lumpy. Most years bring short outages most people shrug off. Then a hurricane or ice storm takes a region down for days, and interest jumps. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, according to the National Hurricane Center. Winter storms do the same further north. Check your own job log for when generator calls arrived in past years, and plan to be ready a month or two before.
Keywords by buying stage
Group generator searches by how close the person is to booking.
Ready to book
- "whole home generator installation", "standby generator installation"
- "generator installer near me", "generator installation [town]"
- "transfer switch installation", "generator hookup for house"
Comparing
- "whole house generator cost", "standby generator price installed"
- "what size generator for my house"
- "natural gas vs propane generator"
Service and repair
- "generator repair", "generator maintenance", "generator won't start"
Brand searches
- An equipment brand plus "installer" or "dealer", only if you are authorized for that brand.
Block from day one
- "for sale", "used", "rental", "rent", "parts", "manual", "portable", "jobs", "salary"
Portable generator searches are mostly shoppers buying a unit at a store. Unless you install inlet boxes and interlocks for portable units, block them. Give "ready to book" searches their own ad group and the most budget. Test "comparing" searches on a smaller budget with a page that answers the price and sizing question.
For the wider electrical account structure, see Google Ads for electricians.
The generator page
A generator is a considered purchase, and the page has to earn a site visit, not just a click. It should answer:
- What size do I need? Explain the choice between covering a few essential circuits and the whole house, in plain words.
- Which fuel? Natural gas, propane or diesel, and what each means at their address.
- What's included? The unit, the transfer switch, the pad, the permit, and whether you coordinate the gas connection.
- How long does it take? From quote to install, honestly, including permit and inspection time.
- What does upkeep involve? Annual service, and whether you offer a maintenance plan.
Put the phone number at the top, then a short quote form that asks for the home's size, the fuel available and what they most want to keep running. Show photos of real installs you have permission to use, and reviews that mention generators.
A short safety section builds trust and helps people. Ready.gov advises using portable generators only outdoors and at least 20 feet from windows, doors and attached garages. Homeowners who have just lived through an outage with a portable unit will recognize the problem you solve.
Business Profile and Local Services Ads
Add generator installation as a service on your Google Business Profile, and post photos of finished installs. Ask generator customers for a review the day the unit is commissioned, so the word "generator" starts appearing in your reviews.
In Local Services Ads, check which generator-related job types are offered for your area. Switch on only the work you actually do, and keep your service area to towns you can reach for site visits.
Timing your spend
- Before the season: build the campaign, the page and the tracking, and run at a low budget to collect data.
- When a major storm is forecast: make sure budgets, hours and phones can take a jump in calls.
- After a big outage: demand can outrun your crews. Give honest lead times on the phone and the page. A promised install date you miss costs more than a lost lead.
- Off season: shift budget toward maintenance and repair searches, and contact past install customers about annual service.
Google Ads can show ads only on the days and hours you choose. Run them when someone can take the call or answer the form quickly.
Follow up every quote
Many generator buyers collect more than one quote and talk it over at home. A simple follow-up rhythm wins jobs that would otherwise drift:
- Same day: send the written quote with photos of a similar install.
- Day 3: call to answer questions.
- Day 10: a short message about install lead times.
- Day 30: one last check-in, then mark the quote closed.
Tag every generator job in your job log with its source, so you can see what each booked install cost by channel.
What the numbers look like
Across the accounts we run at Opus Group, the average cost per lead is $63, and clients win more than $1M of work every month between them. One generator install is worth many service calls, so judge generator leads on cost per booked install rather than cost per lead.
If you want to set up Local Services Ads yourself first, the free guide, How a local service business can spend $1,000 and make $60,000 in a month, walks you through it. Its $60,000 is worked math, not a promise.
What to do this week
- Pull past generator jobs and note the months they came in.
- Build or rewrite your generator page with the five questions above.
- Set up a "ready to book" ad group with the block list in place.
- Add generator installation to your Business Profile services.
- Write the four-step quote follow-up into your office routine.

FAQ
How do electricians get more generator installation leads?
Run Search ads on install searches, send them to a generator page that answers sizing, fuel and permit questions, list the service on your Business Profile, and follow up every quote.
When should electricians advertise generator installation?
Build and test the campaign before your region's outage season, such as ahead of the June 1 start of the Atlantic hurricane season or before winter storms, then be ready to scale up when a major storm is forecast.
Which generator keywords should electricians avoid?
Searches for buying, renting or fixing a unit yourself: "for sale", "used", "rental", "parts", "manual" and, unless you install inlets and interlocks, "portable".

How should electricians follow up generator quotes?
Send the written quote the same day, call on day 3, send a short update on lead times around day 10, and close it out at day 30.
