Summary: Google Local Services Ads charge per lead, not per click, and a lead's price depends on your location, job type, lead type and bidding mode, with message leads typically priced lower than calls. Across the accounts Opus Group runs, leads have averaged $63 over the last twelve months, and in their best months clients have paid between $44 and $90. Starting October 1, 2026, Google also bills some missed calls as leads. Judge the ads on the ad spend behind each booked job, not on the lead price alone.

There's no single price for a Local Services Ads lead, even within one trade. Here's how the price is set, what gets charged and what leads really cost per booked job.

How pricing works: leads, not clicks

You're charged for each valid lead, not for clicks. Google counts these as leads:

  • An answered call where you talk with the customer.
  • A voicemail, or a customer who meaningfully engages with an automated system.
  • A missed call you return.
  • A message or booking request, in the US and Canada.

Google says lead prices can vary with:

  • Location. Prices can differ from one market to the next.
  • Job type. Jobs within a trade can be priced differently.
  • Lead type. Google typically prices a message lead below a phone lead, though it says that isn't always the case.
  • Bidding mode. The original dashboard offers Maximize leads (automated, and Google's recommended option), Target cost per lead (automated, with a target) and Max per lead (a manual cap).

What gets charged in 2026

Missed calls, from October 1, 2026. Google will bill a missed call during your business hours as a lead when the caller stays connected for more than 20 seconds, though some exceptions apply. When a first call goes uncharged, follow-up calls with that same customer can still be billed later if they meet Google's valid-lead criteria. Phone menus get their own rule: if callers must press a key for a department, the 20-second count starts at the key press, and there's no charge for callers who never press one. See what the missed call charges change.

Booking requests. Each booking request is billed as a lead. In 2026 Google's booking partners grew from about 20 to over 500 Reserve with Google partners, and a live partner booking link on your Business Profile can enable bookings in your ads without you doing anything. Check whether yours are live.

What you don't pay for

  • Leads screened out at first contact. When a customer first reaches you, Google assesses the lead, and ones it deems invalid or low quality are never billed.
  • Credits. Google keeps reviewing leads after charging for them and may credit some on its own, and you can give feedback on a lead with Rate this lead. Credits reach your account balance within 30 days, but the original charge remains on your invoice.

Some leads are never credited. Google's list includes:

  • A valid lead outside your business hours.
  • A particular job you don't do, when you've listed the broader service.
  • Work you can't or won't take on right now.
  • A customer wanting advice, or researching projects or prices.
  • A canceled booking.
  • A customer who goes quiet after you call or message back.
  • A customer you quoted and promised a callback, or referred elsewhere.

Google also no longer credits "job type not serviced" or "geo not serviced" leads, and advises revisiting your service areas, job types and categories instead. Here's how to rate bad leads.

What our accounts pay per lead

These figures cover the accounts Opus Group runs across owned channels (Local Services Ads, search ads and local SEO), not Local Services Ads alone. Prices vary by trade and market, so use them as a yardstick, not a quote.

MeasureAcross our accounts
Average cost per lead, last twelve months$63
Cost per call or message from Google, clients' best months$44–$90

Across the accounts we run, the last twelve months averaged $63 a lead, and in their best months clients have paid between $44 and $90 for each call or message from Google. 1776 Tree Service had 117 calls at $44 each in June 2026, and R & J Plumbing & Backflow had 117 calls at $90 each in September 2024.

From cost per lead to cost per booked job

Divide your cost per lead by your close rate and you get the ad spend behind each booked job. Close rates vary by trade and lead source, and shared marketplace leads from Angi, HomeAdvisor and Thumbtack usually close less often, so measure yours from your own job records.

A worked example, with lead prices and close rates you can swap for your own:

LeadClose rateAd cost per booked job
Exclusive, $4045%$89
Exclusive, $4025%$160
Shared, $3015%$200
Shared, $3010%$300

In this example the shared lead is $10 cheaper, yet at its better close rate each booked job still costs more than the exclusive lead at its weaker one.

The free guide, How a local service business can spend $1,000 and make $60,000 in a month, follows the chain from budget to booked jobs to revenue. Its $60,000 is what the guide's example numbers multiply out to, not a forecast.

Budget mechanics: weekly, daily and monthly limits

In the original Local Services Ads dashboard. You set an average weekly budget, and your monthly maximum is that amount times the average number of weeks in a month, about 4.3. A $350 weekly budget allows about $1,500 a month.

In Google Ads. Starting in August 2026, Google has been shifting Local Services Ads accounts over to Google Ads in waves. After the move, your weekly figure is divided by 7 to give an average daily budget, and Google caps monthly spend at that daily average × 30.4. So $350 a week becomes $50 a day, with a monthly cap of $1,520.

Manual bidding is also retired, so there's no Max per lead cap, and one campaign-level target CPA replaces trade-level targets. Google Ads doesn't support vertical-level target CPA bidding, so separate bidding rules for each trade need separate campaigns. Read more on the move into Google Ads and on whether $1,000 a month is enough.

How to pay less per lead

  • Strengthen your profile. According to Google, profiles of higher quality, including ones with images, may pay lower costs per lead as well as rank higher. Add high-quality photos of your work and keep reviews coming. Google recommends 5 or more reviews.
  • Respond fast. Google's auction looks at your bid and at the likelihood of your ad producing a lead. Responsiveness feeds into that likelihood, and missed calls may count against you. The free guide's rule is to reply within 60 seconds.
  • Turn on messages if you'll reply quickly. They're usually priced below calls, and Google notes that message and booking leads can raise the odds of a lead, especially at night and on weekends.
  • Set job types and service areas on purpose. Every job type and area you leave switched on is work you're choosing to pay for, so trim the ones you don't want. See which job types to keep on.

FAQ

How much does a Google Local Services Ads lead cost?

There's no fixed rate, since lead prices can vary with location, job type, lead type and bidding mode. Across the accounts Opus Group runs, leads have averaged $63 over the last twelve months.

Do Local Services Ads charge per click?

No. You pay per valid lead, such as an answered call, a voicemail, a missed call you return, a message or a booking request.

Will I pay for missed calls?

Sometimes. Starting October 1, 2026, Google can bill a missed call during business hours if the caller waits on the line longer than 20 seconds, with some exceptions.

Do I pay for bad leads?

Not if Google rejects the lead as invalid or low quality when a customer first reaches out. Google can also credit charged leads later without you asking. Some, like canceled bookings, can't be credited.

How do I work out my cost per booked job?

Divide your cost per lead by your close rate. A $40 lead that books 25% of the time means $160 of ads per booked job.
