Plumbing Google Ads Keywords: The List by Job and Intent

Want this worked out for your numbers? Free 15-min check → or call +1 (256) 516-9910

Summary: The best plumbing keywords name a job and a need right now: "emergency plumber", "water heater replacement", "sewer line repair". Group them by job, one ad group and one landing page each, and start with phrase and exact match. Treat research searches such as "how much does a plumber cost" with care, and block do-it-yourself and job-seeker searches from day one.

A keyword list is only half the job. The other half is deciding which keywords get their own ad group, page and budget, and which wait. This list is grouped the way we build plumbing accounts: by job first, then by how close the person searching is to picking up the phone.

How to use this list

  • One job, one ad group, one page. A search for "tankless water heater install" should see an ad about tankless installs and land on a tankless page.
  • Start with phrase and exact match. Google says exact match shows ads on searches with the same meaning or intent as the keyword, and phrase match on searches that include its meaning. Broad match can show ads on searches related to your keyword, including ones without its direct meaning. We only add broad match once conversion tracking is solid and bidding is conversion-based.
  • Check prices before you build. In Keyword Planner, Google says the low end of the "top of page bid" range is roughly the 20th percentile of what advertisers have paid for top-of-page placement, and the high end roughly the 80th, for your location settings. Use it to rank jobs, not to set bids.
  • Do not build all of it at once. Start with the two or three jobs you most want, then add.

Notation: "phrase match" in quotes, [exact match] in square brackets.

The four intent tiers

  1. Now: something is broken. "burst pipe", "emergency plumber", "sewer backup". Highest value and usually the most expensive clicks.
  2. Job: they know what they need. "water heater replacement", "repipe house", "hydro jetting". The core of most plumbing accounts.
  3. Find a plumber: "plumber near me", "plumbers in [town]". LocaliQ puts US searches for "plumber near me" at almost 180,000 a month, but the job behind each search is unknown, so these need their own ad group and close watching.
  4. Research: "cost to replace water heater", "how much is a repipe". Real buyers, earlier in the decision. Test them on a small budget with a page that answers the price question.

Town names and brand names

If you target by location, people in your area searching "water heater replacement" can already see your ad, so you do not need a town name on every keyword. Town keywords such as "plumber [town]" help catch people searching from outside the area, for a parent's house or a rental, for example. Add your main towns to the "find a plumber" group and watch them.

Equipment brand names, such as a water heater brand plus "repair", can work if you service that brand. Do not bid on competitors' company names; it rarely pays and invites the same back.

Three or four groups is plenty for a first month. If your budget is small, start with the one job you most want. The month-by-month order of work is in your first 30 days on Google Ads.

What the keyword list will not fix

Keywords decide who sees your ad. They do not decide whether the click turns into a booked job. That depends on the page, the phone and the hours. If clicks are coming in and calls are not, check the page with our plumbing landing page checklist before adding more keywords.

For a sense of what a tight build can do: one plumbing account we run spent $14.1K on Google Ads between August 31 and September 27, 2026. That paid for 237 calls and forms, roughly $60 each, at a $6.00 average click. Most were water heater installs, repipes and sewer work, and about $300K of work followed. Every ad pointed to a page for that one job.

For the full system, read the free guide, How a local service business can spend $1,000 and make $60,000 in a month. Its $60,000 is worked math, not a promise.

What to do this week

  1. Pick your two or three most wanted jobs from the list.
  2. Run them through Keyword Planner for your area and note the bid ranges.
  3. Build one ad group per job with phrase and exact match only.
  4. Add the block list before you launch.
  5. Read the search terms report every week for the first month.

FAQ

What are the best Google Ads keywords for plumbers?

Keywords that name a job and an urgent need: "emergency plumber", "water heater replacement", "sewer line repair", "drain cleaning". Group them by job with a matching landing page.

Should plumbers bid on "plumber near me"?

Yes, in its own ad group with close watching. LocaliQ puts US searches for it at almost 180,000 a month, but the job behind each search is unknown, so check the calls it brings.

Which match type should a plumber use?

Start with phrase and exact match. Add broad match only once conversion tracking is reliable and bidding is conversion-based, and check search terms weekly.

How many keywords should a plumbing ad group have?

Enough to cover one job and its common wordings, usually a handful to a couple of dozen. If keywords need different pages, they need different ad groups.

Which keywords should plumbers avoid?

Do-it-yourself searches ("how to", "parts", "video"), job seekers ("jobs", "salary", "apprentice"), and jobs or areas you do not serve. Add them as negatives before launch.
