How Much Does Plumber Marketing Cost in 2026? Every Line of the Monthly Bill

Summary: Plumber marketing costs your ad spend plus the cost of running it: management, a website that converts, tracking and software, and your own time. Set the ad spend backwards from the jobs you want: divide your target jobs by your close rate to get leads, then multiply by your cost per lead. Add the other lines and judge the total on what each booked job costs you.
It's easy to count only the ad spend when you add up what marketing costs. The real monthly bill has five lines. Here's what drives each one, and how to set the biggest from the jobs you want instead of a guess.
The five lines on the bill
| Line | What drives it | Where your number comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Ad spend | Booked jobs you want, close rate, cost per lead | The backwards math below |
| Running the ads | Channels, scope and how the fee is set | Agency quotes, or a hire's pay |
| Website and landing pages | A build, hosting, a page per job | Your web quote |
| Tracking and software | How many sources you track, what tools you use | Your subscriptions |
| Your time | Hours a week on marketing | Your hours times what an hour of yours earns |
Line 1: ad spend, worked backwards from booked jobs
Two steps:
- Booked jobs you want ÷ your close rate = leads you need.
- Leads × your cost per lead = monthly ad spend.
Example numbers to swap for yours: you want 20 more booked jobs a month, you close 35% of your leads, and a lead costs you $50. You need about 58 leads (20 ÷ 0.35, rounded up), so about $2,900 a month in ads.
Your lead price and close rate both move the budget. Here's what 20 booked jobs a month takes at example lead prices and close rates, to swap for yours:
| Close rate | Leads for 20 jobs | At $25 a lead | At $50 a lead | At $75 a lead |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25% | 80 | $2,000 | $4,000 | $6,000 |
| 35% | 58 | $1,450 | $2,900 | $4,350 |
| 45% | 45 | $1,125 | $2,250 | $3,375 |
Look down the $50 column: lifting your close rate from 25% to 45% saves $1,750 a month for the same 20 jobs. Answering the phone is a budget line. What moves the lead price itself is covered in how much plumbing leads cost.
Then check the result against Google. For Local Services Ads, Google suggests a budget for at least about 10 leads a week on Maximize leads. That's roughly 10 leads × about 4.3 weeks × your lead price each month. Well below that, each week rests on a handful of leads and results swing more.
Our free guide, How a local service business can spend $1,000 and make $60,000 in a month, runs the same chain forward from $30 a call and a $3,000 job. It's worked math, not a promise.
How Google turns a budget into a bill
- Local Services Ads, original dashboard: you set an average weekly budget. Some weeks can go over it, but never the monthly max: the weekly budget times the average number of weeks in a month. Hit the max and your ad won't appear for the rest of the month unless you adjust your budget.
- Local Services Ads moved into Google Ads: since August 2026, Google has been moving accounts over in waves. The weekly budget becomes an average daily budget (weekly ÷ 7), and monthly spend is capped at the daily average × 30.4.
- Search ads: you set an average daily budget. A campaign can spend up to twice that on a busy day, but for most campaigns the month is capped at 30.4 times the daily budget. For the $2,900 example, about $95 a day keeps you there: $95 × 30.4 = $2,888.
How to split the money between channels is in plumber advertising in 2026, and the order to build them in is in how to get more plumbing leads.
Line 2: running it, whether that's an agency, a hire or you
With an agency, these drive the fee:
- Scope: Local Services Ads only, or Search ads, landing pages and SEO as well.
- How the fee is set: flat monthly, per lead, linked to your ad spend, or a mix. Ask what happens to the fee when your ad spend goes up.
- Setup: tracking, landing pages and help with Local Services Ads verification, and whether that's a separate one-off charge.
- The weekly work: search terms and negatives, rating bad leads, job types and schedules, listening to calls, and a monthly report of cost per booked job by channel.
- Terms: contract length, notice period, and whether they also work for the plumber down the road. We work month to month.
An in-house marketer costs pay, payroll taxes, tools and training, plus your time managing them. Compare that total with agency quotes for the same scope. We compare all four routes, with public pay data, in in-house vs agency vs freelancer for plumbers.
Doing it yourself isn't free either. Example numbers to swap for yours: 5 hours a week is about 21.5 hours a month, and at $100 for an hour of your time, that's about $2,150 you aren't earning on the tools or in sales.
Line 3: website and landing pages
The page an ad sends people to decides whether they call. A plumbing site needs tap-to-call at the top, one page per job, real photos, and your license and insurance on show. Search ads should land on a page built for the job, such as "Water Heater Replacement in [City]," not your home page. Budget for the build, then hosting, updates and a new page each time you add a job to your ads, and get quotes that price each part. What the site needs is in plumbing website design.
Line 4: tracking and software
- Google's own tracking costs nothing extra. Call reporting logs calls from Search ads, and Google's forwarding numbers can replace your number on your website "without any cost to you," counting calls longer than a length you set.
- Local Services Ads track their own leads. Don't swap in a tracking number there: Google says the business phone number must not be a tracking number.
- Keep your real local number on your Business Profile. Google's guidelines ask for "a local phone number instead of a central call center helpline number whenever possible." Measure the profile through its Performance report instead.
- Paid call tracking earns its place when mailers, truck wraps, marketplaces or pay-per-call tests each need their own number. Google lets you switch off its own call reporting if you do.
- Scheduling, CRM and review-request tools count too, for the part you use on leads and reviews.
Add it up: what each booked job costs, all in
Divide the whole monthly bill by the jobs it booked. Example numbers to swap for yours: $2,900 of ads and $2,150 of your own time booked 20 jobs. That's $145 a job in ad spend alone, but about $253 a job all in. Add your management, website and software lines the same way, then compare the all-in figure with what an average job earns you after labor and materials.
Plan for the swings too. A hard freeze can bring a wave of burst pipes, so keep room to raise the budget for a few days, if someone can answer the calls.
What to do this week
- Write down how many more booked jobs you want a month, and last month's close rate.
- Work out the leads you need and the ad spend at your own cost per lead.
- List every other marketing cost: fees, website, tracking, software and your hours.
- Divide last month's total by last month's booked jobs.
- If you use an agency, ask for last month's cost per booked job by channel.
FAQ
How much does plumber marketing cost per month?
Your ad spend plus the cost of running it. Example numbers: 20 booked jobs at a 35% close rate and $50 a lead need about $2,900 of ads a month.
How much should a plumbing company spend on marketing?
Work backwards from the booked jobs you want, not from a flat percentage: jobs ÷ close rate = leads, and leads × cost per lead = ad spend. Then check the all-in cost per booked job against your profit on a job.
What does a plumbing marketing agency charge?
Agencies set fees in different ways (flat monthly, per lead, linked to your ad spend, or a mix), depending on scope, setup and terms. Whatever the model, ask for cost per booked job by channel every month.
How do I set a plumbing marketing budget with no history?
Start from the $63 average across the accounts we run and Google's suggestion of at least about 10 Local Services Ads leads a week. Give it a full month, since Google says results take about two weeks to settle, then redo the backwards math with your own close rate and cost per lead.
