Angi Alternative for Plumbers: When Angi Fits and What to Build Instead
Summary: The best Angi alternative for most plumbers is channels you control: your Google Business Profile, Local Services Ads and Search ads on the jobs you want. Angi can still fill quiet weeks. Its own filings say homeowners pick the pros they connect with, one request can become leads for more than one pro, and pros pay for matches whether or not they get the job. Judge both on what a booked job costs, and keep Angi capped until your own channels prove themselves.

"Is Angi worth it?" is really two questions: does it book jobs at a price that works for you, and what would the same money book somewhere else? Here's how Angi works today, in its own words, when it fits, and how to switch without a gap in the schedule.
How Angi works in 2026, in its own words
Everything in this section comes from Angi Inc.'s filings with the SEC.
- One company, several brands. Angi Inc. operates under brands including Angi, Angie's List, HomeAdvisor and Handy, so moving between Angi and HomeAdvisor keeps you with the same company.
- Homeowners choose. In early 2025, Angi moved nearly all of its US experiences to "homeowner choice," so homeowners are "connected only with available Pros that they select." Its latest annual report says consumers can generally review the profiles, ratings and reviews of the pros presented to them and pick the one they think fits best, and pros may contact consumers who selected them.
- One request, possibly several leads. Angi's own definition: "a single Service Request can result in multiple Leads."
- You pay for the match. Angi's US revenue includes "fees paid by Pros for consumer matches (regardless of whether the Pro ultimately provides the requested service)." Lead revenue "varies based upon several factors, including the service requested, product experience offered, and geographic location of service."
- Several ways to take part. In 2025, pros used full-priced leads within a monthly budget, discounted leads in a subscription package, double opt-in leads a la carte, and pre-priced offerings.
- Reviews stay on Angi. Homeowners rate pros on Angi's own one-to-five-star scale.
None of that makes Angi good or bad for your company. It tells you what you're paying for: a chance at the job, not the job.
When Angi can make sense
- While Local Services Ads verification runs. Google says it takes 3–4 weeks on average after you submit your documents.
- Quiet weeks. A capped budget can put idle trucks to work.
- A new service area, where nobody knows your name yet.
In each case, cap the spend, tag every Angi job in your job log, and keep it only while it books jobs as cheaply as your other channels.
If you're starting Local Services Ads yourself, our free guide, How a local service business can spend $1,000 and make $60,000 in a month, walks you through it. Its example assumes $30 a call and a $3,000 job; the $60,000 is worked math, not a promise.
Why your own channels usually cost less per booked job
Close rates on your own channels and on shared marketplace leads can differ a lot, so measure both from your own job records. At the same cost per lead, that gap decides the math. Example numbers to swap for yours, at $40 a lead:
| Where the lead came from | Close rate | Ad cost per booked job |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplace, at its best | 15% | $267 |
| Marketplace, at its worst | 10% | $400 |
| Your own channels, at their worst | 25% | $160 |
| Your own channels, at their best | 45% | $89 |
At the same price, the worst case for your own channels beats the best case for marketplace leads. Your prices won't match exactly, which is why you measure both. For what a plumbing lead costs on your own channels, see how much plumbing leads cost.
Three more reasons that hold whatever the price:
- Your name is on the ad. Local Services Ads put your star rating and the Google Verified badge at the very top of Google, and the homeowner contacts your business directly through your ad.
- Your reviews work twice. Google reviews count toward Local Services Ads ranking and toward the map pack, and they build on your own profile.
- Your settings. You pick your job types, service area and hours, and Google won't credit leads for specific jobs you don't do when you listed the general service, so set them with care.
None of this is certain. You pay Google for valid leads whether or not they book, and a homeowner can call more than one plumber from Google too: Google prices message leads partly on whether the customer has contacted other Local Services advertisers. That's why you track both channels.
The switch plan
Do the first two this week, because verification is the slow part.
- Business Profile. Local Services Ads need a public, verified one. Verify yours (Google's verification reviews take up to 5 business days), set your service area, list every job as a service and add real photos. Details in our plumber SEO guide.
- Local Services Ads. Apply as soon as the profile is verified. Match your business name exactly across license, insurance and profile. Some US businesses also need a D-U-N-S number, though registration documents or an EIN can sometimes stand in. See our Local Services Ads playbook for plumbers.
- Search ads on your best job. Google says most ads are reviewed within one business day, so this is the fastest channel to switch on. Start with the job you want most, such as water heater replacement, on its own page. The setup is in our Google Ads playbook for plumbers.
- Reviews. From today, ask every customer for a Google review the same day, by text or QR code. Google's policy bans incentives and asking only happy customers.
- Tracking. Ask every caller "How did you find us?" and log the source, job type, value and outcome.
Run both during the switch
- Keep Angi steady and capped until Local Services Ads is live and has had time to settle; Google's Local Services Ads help says results take about two weeks.
- Answer both the same way. The free guide's rule is to reply within 60 seconds, every time. From October 1, 2026, a missed Local Services Ads call during business hours can be charged if the caller holds on for more than 20 seconds, with some exceptions.
- Compare every month: spend, leads, booked jobs and revenue by source, and the cost per booked job for each.
- Move money a step at a time toward the lowest cost per booked job. If Angi still earns its place, keep it as a capped gap-filler; if not, wind it down.
The order to build everything in, reviews and past customers included, is in how to get more plumbing leads.
What to do this week
- Add up last quarter's Angi spend and the jobs it booked, and divide.
- Verify your Business Profile and list every job you want as a service.
- Start Local Services Ads verification as soon as the profile is verified.
- Launch one Search campaign for your most valuable job.
- Add "How did you find us?" to your booking script.
FAQ
Is Angi worth it for plumbers?
It can be, as a capped way to fill quiet weeks, if its cost per booked job holds up against your other channels. Close rates vary by lead source, trade and answer speed, so measure yours before you scale it.
Is HomeAdvisor an alternative to Angi?
Not really. Angi Inc. operates under brands including Angi, Angie's List, HomeAdvisor and Handy, so switching between them keeps you with the same company.
Is Thumbtack an alternative?
It's a separate marketplace, and customers can contact several pros there too: Thumbtack's help pages say it limits a customer to five pros in the first four hours of a search, and that most contact fewer. Judge it the same way, on cost per booked job.
How long does it take to replace Angi leads?
Search ads can start soonest, since Google says most ads are reviewed within one business day. Local Services Ads verification takes 3–4 weeks on average. Plan to run Angi and your own channels side by side for at least a month after that.
Do Local Services Ads charge for leads that don't book?
Yes. You pay per valid lead, such as an answered call, a voicemail, a missed call you return, a message or a booking. Leads judged invalid at first contact aren't charged, and some charged leads are credited later.
