How Google Ranks Local Services Ads in 2026: What Moves You Up the Box

Summary: Google ranks Local Services Ads with an auction that weighs two things: your bid, and how likely your ad is to turn into a lead. That likelihood comes from how responsive you are (missed calls can count against you), how well you match the customer's search, whether messages and bookings are switched on, and the quality of your profile: your rating, number of reviews, average response time, photos and completed verification checks. Google also spreads opportunity across providers, so nobody owns the top spot forever. The practical upshot: a business that answers fast and keeps the reviews coming can sit above one that simply bids more.

Only a few businesses fit in the box at the top of Google. Owners often assume the top spot goes to whoever pays the most. Google's own description says otherwise, and most of what moves you up costs nothing extra.

The factors, in plain English

1. Your bid. The most you're willing to pay for a lead. It counts, but it's only one input.

2. How likely your ad is to get a lead. This is where most businesses win or lose:

  • Responsiveness. How quickly and reliably you answer calls and messages. Google says missed calls may count against you.
  • The customer's search. The service they want, where they are and when they're searching. A customer outside your service area, or searching for a job you've switched off, isn't a match.
  • Relevance. How well your business fits that search.
  • Contact options. Having message and booking leads switched on can help.

3. Your profile quality.

  • Rating and number of reviews.
  • Average response time.
  • High-quality images.
  • Verification checks completed.
  • Other business information on your profile.

4. A fair share for everyone. Google balances the marketplace so other providers get opportunity too. And if you have several locations covering the same area, only your highest-ranking one shows for a search.

The cheap ways to move up

  • Answer every call. If you can't, call back fast. Text first, because many people ignore unknown numbers. Our free guide recommends replying within 60 seconds.
  • Reply to messages just as quickly. Message leads count toward how responsive you are.
  • Ask every customer for a review, every week. A steady flow beats a burst every few months.
  • Keep adding real photos. Your team, your trucks, finished jobs. Replace old ones as you go.
  • Match your hours to reality. Hours you don't answer in create missed calls, and from October 1, 2026 some missed calls are charged. See our missed call charges explainer.
  • Tighten your job types and service area. You'll show up for searches you can win, and junk leads fall.
  • Finish every verification check. Completed checks are one of the profile factors Google lists.

When raising the bid makes sense

Raise your budget or bid when the basics are already strong and the math works: you answer fast, reviews are healthy, and booked jobs pay back more than the leads cost. Raising the bid to cover missed calls or a thin profile usually means paying more for the same leads.

A quick self-check

Search your trade and your town on your phone:

  • Do you show up at all? If not, check your service area, job types, hours and budget.
  • Who is above you? Compare their rating and review count with yours.
  • Is your phone answered when a customer calls? Don't call your own listing to test it; ask a friend to call your normal number instead and see how long it takes to reach a person.

Why ranking changes your math

Ranking higher usually means more calls for the same budget. That's the first of three levers in our free guide, How a local service business can spend $1,000 and make $60,000 in a month: pay less per call, book more of your calls, and win bigger jobs.

FAQ

Does the highest bid win in Local Services Ads?

Not on its own. Google weighs your bid alongside how likely your ad is to result in a lead, which depends on responsiveness, relevance and profile quality.

Do missed calls hurt my Local Services Ads ranking?

Google says missed calls may negatively affect your responsiveness, which is part of how ads are ranked.

Do reviews affect Local Services Ads ranking?

Yes. Your rating and number of reviews are part of the profile quality Google considers.

Why does my ranking change from search to search?

Google looks at each customer's search, including the service, location and time, and balances opportunity across providers, so positions move.

Do photos matter?

High-quality images are one of the profile quality factors Google lists. Real photos of your team and work also help customers choose you.
