Google Local Services Ads for Kitchen and Bathroom Remodelers: The 2026 Playbook

Summary: Remodeling contractors can use Google Local Services Ads to show at the top of Google, paying for leads rather than clicks. Google's US categories are "Kitchen remodeling" and "Bathroom remodeling"; choose the one you sell, or both. Opus Group has no remodeling cost-per-lead benchmark, so measure the ads by cost per consult and per signed project over a quarter or more. On the phone, book the in-home consult rather than quoting.
A remodeling lead becomes a consult, then a proposal and, if you win it, a project that may start months later.
What a remodeling lead is worth: the math that matters
Opus Group hasn't set a cost-per-lead benchmark for remodeling, and lead prices shift with job type, lead type, location and bidding mode. Close rates vary by trade and lead source, and we haven't measured remodeling, so track each step with your own numbers:
| Step | Example quarter |
|---|---|
| Leads | 30 |
| In-home consults held | 12 (4 in 10 leads) |
| Projects signed | 3 (1 in 4 consults) |
| Average signed project | $25,000 |
That's $75,000 of signed work from 30 leads, or $2,500 of revenue per lead, arriving over months.
So judge the ads by cost per consult and per signed project, over a quarter rather than a week: projects sign later, and Google says results take about two weeks to settle. Tag every lead's source so late signings are traced back to the ads; here's a simple way to track ROI.
Run your own numbers through the worksheet in the free guide, How a local service business can spend $1,000 and make $60,000 in a month; that $60,000 comes from worked math in the guide and isn't a promise.
Kitchen, bathroom or both: getting Google Verified
Google Verified is the blue badge that replaced Google Guaranteed in October 2025. For both US remodeling categories, Google lists "General liability insurance" and "Professional liability insurance," plus "Owner license on state level" and "Business license on state level." The licenses apply "Where applicable by local law." The background checks differ:
- Kitchen remodeling: "Business check" and "Owner check."
- Bathroom remodeling: "Business check (Select users only)" and "Owner check (Select users only)," plus business registration checks: "Business check (Select users only)" and "Business representative check (Select users only)."
Check your state, county and city rules; you confirm that everyone on the job, subs included, is licensed. Neither entry sets a review minimum, though Google suggests five or more, and some businesses may need five to appear, depending on type. Google puts verification at three to four weeks on average from submission. Use one spelling of the business name everywhere: license, insurance and Business Profile; mismatches hold verification up.
Choosing: list the rooms you sell; a bath-only shop shouldn't pay for kitchen leads. If you list both:
- Each category brings its own checks. In the original dashboard, you switch on at least one of its job types, then upload its extra verification.
- Broad search is one setting. It sits under Profile & budget > Settings, not under each category, and Google warns that switching it off may mean fewer leads, because your ads stop serving for general category searches.
- Bidding spans both. After the move into Google Ads, one campaign-level target CPA covers every category in a campaign, unless you run separate campaigns per category.
See the setup guide.
Remodeling job types worth paying for, and ones to switch off
Practical calls, not Google's official list:
- Keep on: full kitchen and bath remodels, plus smaller jobs that lead to them, such as tub-to-shower conversions.
- Consider switching off: one-fixture repairs like a dripping faucet or a cracked tile; cabinet-only or countertop-only work if you only sell full remodels; accessibility installs you don't do.
Work you don't offer that sits under a service you listed can't be credited, and credits for leads outside your job types or service area are gone. So small-repair calls you leave on are yours to pay for, and referring them to a handyman earns no credit. Booked months out? Narrow your job types or pause, since work you're too booked, or unwilling, to take on for now isn't creditable either.
How to rank above other remodelers
Google orders the box by your bid and its estimate of how likely your ad is to end in a lead:
- Let photos sell the room. Google ties images to profile quality, which it says may lift your position and lower what you pay per lead.
- Ask for reviews at the final walkthrough. Rating and review count feed profile quality. Ask every client, not just the delighted ones; Google's rules forbid incentives and selective asking.
- Leave messages and bookings switched on. Google says they can make a lead more likely when you can't pick up at night or on weekends.
- Name your work in your bio. Relevance covers your services and bio: kitchens, baths or both, design help, towns covered.
Bad remodeling leads and what to do about them
You aren't billed for leads Google deems invalid or low quality from the first contact, and some charged leads are credited automatically. Use "Rate this lead" on the others; any credits arrive within 30 days, while your invoice keeps the original charge.
- Idea shoppers. "Just seeing what a new kitchen costs." Researching projects or prices isn't credited, so offer a consult instead of writing them off.
- Handyman calls. A running toilet or one loose tile. Switch those job types off.
Also not credited: requests for advice, a lead you quoted and promised to call back, a canceled consult booking, a caller who never answers your return call, and valid leads outside business hours. See how to dispute bad leads.
Turning calls into booked consults
Answer or call back within 60 seconds; that's the free guide's standard. The first call has one job: booking the in-home consult. A phone price, before you've seen the room, is only a guess.
- "Hi, this is [Name] with [Company]. Is it a kitchen or a bathroom you're thinking about?"
- "What's not working now? Full remodel or a few updates, and by when?"
- If they ask about price: "Most of our [kitchens/baths] land between [your range]. Is that close to what you had in mind?"
- "Next is a consult at your home: we measure, talk through options and send a written proposal. Can everyone who'll decide be there? Would [day] at [time] or [day] at [time] work?"
Text back any call you miss: "[Name] from [Company] here, sorry I missed you, I'm on a job site. Kitchen or bath? Text me a few photos of the room and I'll send two consult times this week."
What changed for remodelers in 2026
As of September 2026, three changes matter:
- Missed-call charges begin October 1, 2026. After that date, a missed call in your business hours becomes a paid lead once the caller has waited more than 20 seconds, with some exceptions; if it isn't charged, later valid follow-up calls can be. A phone left on silent during a consult could cost you.
- The shift into Google Ads. Google has been migrating accounts to Performance Max based campaigns since August 2026, a wave at a time, and remodeling isn't on its first-phase list. When yours moves, weekly budgets become daily averages, manual bidding ends and your leads sit under Goals > Conversions > Leads. Save your old reports first; they won't come across. Details: what changes when your account moves.
- Online consult bookings. Local Services Ads now take bookings through 500-plus Reserve with Google partners, up from roughly 20, and a live booking link from a partner app on your Business Profile can turn them on automatically. If homeowners book consults online, confirm each one quickly: bookings are charged as leads, and canceled ones aren't credited.
FAQ
Should I choose Kitchen remodeling or Bathroom remodeling?
Choose the room you sell, or both if you do both. Each category brings its own US checks.
What do remodeling leads from Local Services Ads cost?
No set price: it depends on where you work, the job, the lead type and how you bid. Without a remodeling benchmark from us, measure your own cost per consult and signed project.
Should I quote prices over the phone?
Give a range if asked, but aim to book the in-home consult. Google won't credit a lead you quoted and promised to call back.
How long before I know whether the ads work?
Give it at least a quarter, since projects sign weeks or months after the first call.
