Google Local Services Ads for Garage Door Companies: The 2026 Playbook

Summary: Garage door companies can run Google Local Services Ads under the "Garage door services" category, paying per lead to appear at the top of Google. Setup takes longer than in most trades: Google adds service professional background checks and Advanced Verification, which typically takes around 6–8 weeks, and offers no pre-badge ads. Lead prices vary, so judge the ads on what a lead is worth to you, and answer every call fast.
Garage door calls usually start with something stuck: a car behind a closed door, a snapped spring, a door off its track.
What a garage door lead is worth: repairs vs. new doors
Three things decide if the ads pay: lead price, the share of leads that book, and your average ticket. Google sets the price per lead by where you work, the job, whether it's a call or message, and how you bid. The other two numbers set the most you can afford.
Run them separately for repairs and new doors. Placeholder numbers, not garage door benchmarks: one lead in three books, and ads get up to a fifth of booked work.
| Example (placeholder numbers) | Repair | New door |
|---|---|---|
| Say the average ticket is | $300 | $2,000 |
| Booked work per lead, at 1 in 3 | $100 | about $667 |
| Most you'd pay per lead, at 20% | $20 | about $133 |
A price that works for door sales can lose money on repairs, so tag every lead by job type. Close rates vary by trade and lead source, so use your own rate.
The free guide, How a local service business can spend $1,000 and make $60,000 in a month, runs the same numbers on $30 calls, three in five booked and $3,000 jobs. The $60,000 is where the guide's worked math lands, not a promise.
Verification: what Google checks for garage door companies
Google calls garage doors an urgent category, so providers seeking the Google Verified badge get "an additional level of screening, which includes service professional background checks and Google's Advanced Verification screening process." The US list:
- Background checks: business, owner and service professional checks.
- Insurance: general liability and professional liability.
- Licenses: business and owner licenses at the state level, where applicable by local law.
Advanced Verification is separate. Google says US garage door companies must pass it to serve in the Local Services unit, even after clearing the background and license checks. It typically takes around 6–8 weeks and includes a recorded video interview. You get one appeal, and Google may ask you to re-verify every 12 months.
There's no head start: pre-badge ads, which let many categories take leads while finishing checks, aren't available for garage door services, and you can't show on related searches until Advanced Verification is done. Google's standard screening averages 3–4 weeks after you submit documents, so apply early.
Keep one business name across license, insurance and Business Profile. The policy says customers must see your legal business name or a registered fictitious business name, and Google may ask for a DBA registration certificate. Passed Advanced Verification for Google Search ads already? Google can usually apply that status here under the same name, website and address. And collect reviews first: Google recommends five or more, and some businesses need five before their ad shows.
Garage door jobs to keep on and switch off
Google describes the trade as working "with overhead and garage door systems, among other services." Practical advice, not Google's official job type list:
- Usually keep on: broken springs and cables, dead openers, doors off track, and new installs if you can get doors quickly.
- Consider switching off: commercial overhead doors if you only do homes, gate operators if you don't service gates, and remote programming if the truck roll loses money.
Offer opener repair but turn down gate operators, and you still pay for gate calls: Google won't credit one specific job you skip inside a broader service you offer. It also stopped crediting unserved job types and areas, and it won't credit work you're temporarily not able or willing to take.
Ranking above other garage door companies
Google's auction weighs your bid against the odds your ad becomes a lead (how the ranking works). What you control:
- Answering. Unanswered calls can hurt, and a tech tensioning a spring can't pick up, so send ad calls to a dispatcher.
- Reviews. Rating and review volume both count toward profile quality. Ask once the door runs quietly.
- Photos. Google says profiles with good images may rank higher and even pay less per lead.
- Bio. Relevance draws on your services and bio, so name the work and towns you want.
- Messages and bookings. Google says they can lift your lead chances, especially on nights and weekends.
- Area and hours. Leads from towns you don't cover, or outside your listed hours, aren't credited, and unanswered calls inside those hours can be billed from October 1, 2026.
Bad garage door leads, and what to do about them
- "Can I change the spring myself?" Advice requests aren't credited.
- "How much is a new door?" then silence. Price research isn't credited, so quote a range and offer a measuring visit.
- Gate, commercial or parts-only calls you pass on. Referrals to another provider earn no credit, and neither do canceled bookings or callers who ignore your callback.
Rate each one with "Rate this lead." Leads Google flags as invalid or low quality on arrival cost nothing, and charged leads get reassessed, sometimes credited automatically. Credits arrive as account balance within 30 days, and your invoice keeps showing the original charge.
Turning garage door calls into booked jobs
The guide's advice is a reply inside 60 seconds, because a customer with a trapped car will try the next listing. A short script (more templates):
- "[Company], this is [Name]. Is the door stuck shut, stuck open or off its track?"
- "Is a car stuck inside?" If so, offer your first real opening.
- "What's the address?" Confirm it's in your area.
- "Can you text a photo of the door and opener?" The tech brings the right parts.
- "[Tech] can be there between [time] and [time]. Spring repairs like this usually run [your range]." Book it and text a confirmation.
Promise only windows you'll hit. Advanced Verification rules ban rapid response-time claims you can't always keep in text ads and on landing pages.
Missed-call text: "This is [Name] with [Company], sorry I couldn't pick up. Is the door stuck shut, stuck open or off its track? Text your address and a photo and I'll call back with a time."
What changed for garage door companies in 2026
As of September 2026:
- Google Ads comes later for garage doors. The move into Google Ads began in August 2026, but Google directs Advanced Verification categories, garage doors included, to the legacy Local Services Ads portal during the migration and says pay-per-lead goals in Performance Max open to them in 2027. Old reports won't carry over, so save monthly exports now (what the move changes).
- Missed calls can be billed from October 1, 2026. During business hours, a missed call counts as a lead if the caller holds for over 20 seconds, with some exceptions. Behind a phone menu, the clock starts at the key press.
- More booking apps. Google can now take bookings through more than 500 Reserve with Google partners, up from about 20, and may turn on an existing partner link from your Business Profile automatically. Each booking request counts as a billed lead.
FAQ
Do garage door companies need Advanced Verification for Local Services Ads?
Yes. Google says US garage door services must pass it to serve in the Local Services unit, even after the background and license checks.
Can a garage door company get leads while verification is pending?
No. Google doesn't offer pre-badge ads for garage door services, so leads start only once every check, Advanced Verification included, is done.
What does a garage door lead cost on Local Services Ads?
Google prices each lead by location, job, lead type and bidding mode, so compare your own figure with close rate times average ticket.
Are garage door accounts moving into Google Ads in 2026?
Not yet. Google says garage door accounts use the legacy portal during the migration and become available for pay-per-lead Performance Max campaigns in 2027.
